The best choice when accurate white light matters. The dedicated white LED channel produces a clean, consistent white that RGB mixing simply cannot replicate. Essential for bias lighting, photography setups, or any application where white tone accuracy is important.

The smart choice for installations over 5 metres. Running at 12V instead of 5V means significantly lower current for the same power, which reduces voltage drop and lets you run longer lengths before needing power injection. The backup data line also means a single failed LED won’t break the rest of the strip.
Best for: Runs over 5m, permanent installations, reliability-critical builds
WS2812B · 5V · 144 LED/m

When resolution matters — staircases, under-cabinet strips where individual LED dots are visible, or 2D matrix panels. 144 LEDs per metre is 2.4× the density of standard 60/m strips, giving silky-smooth gradients and animations. Power requirements are significant — plan carefully.

APA102 / SK9822 · 5V · 60 LED/m

The only choice if your LEDs will appear on camera or in photos. APA102 and its clone SK9822 use a separate clock line (SPI protocol) enabling data rates of 20MHz+ — eliminating the PWM flicker that WS2812B produces at shutter speeds above ~1/500s. Completely flicker-free at all camera settings.

WS2812B · 5V · 30 LED/m
~$4–7 USD per 5m
When budget is the primary concern — outdoor strips behind gutters or in inaccessible locations where dot visibility and colour quality are less critical. Half the current draw of 60/m makes power injection less critical. Buy from established sellers and inspect LED bins carefully.
Best for: Outdoor accents, hidden strips, budget builds, long non-visible runs
Strips with no brand or markings
Often use reject LED bins with inconsistent colour, early failures, and poor quality control. Difficult to return when issues appear.
IP68 "fully waterproof" adhesive-backed strips
The thick epoxy coating makes them nearly impossible to solder and the coating often peels. IP65 silicone coated is a better option for weather resistance.
Strips with very short sample lengths
Cheap sellers send a working sample but the bulk roll may be from a different (lower quality) batch. Always buy the full length you need from one source.
"Smart" strips claiming app control via Bluetooth
These are not WLED-compatible. They use proprietary protocols and cannot be flashed with WLED firmware.
RGB+IC strips from unknown sources at unusually low prices
Often use incorrect LED timing that causes compatibility issues with WLED’s timing for certain chipsets.
